Whilst the market was not officially 'closed down' the stay at home measures meant that most of the practical steps required to enable the conveyancing market to function were on hold.
The government has announced that the housing market can re-start. The following are now permitted:
- estate agents' offices can re-open
- viewings – whether virtual or in person – are permitted
- show homes can open
- removal companies and the other essential parts of the sales and letting process are re-started
The above steps are, unsurprisingly subject to important caveats, including:
- viewings must be by appointment only
- social distancing must be maintained at all times
- the current occupier of a property should not be in the house when a viewing takes place
Legal firms carrying out conveyancing work can continue to offer services to their clients – but the challenges for them remain in relation to such issues as maintaining social distancing when meeting clients to go through documentation and working remotely where possible.
Many conveyancing firms have risen to the challenge and remain very much open for business in this challenging time.
